As Above So Below: Creatures Under the Moonlit Tide

Living in South Carolina during the Fall of 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall before I ever really had a chance to fully know the land. Flooded streets, uprooted trees, homes torn open like paper. Water, which I had always known as a giver of life, revealed itself as a force of destruction. In that duality, something shifted in me. Water became more than a material—it became a metaphor. This body of artwork is rooted in the aftermath of that storm, not just the physical damage but the emotional and internal transformations it stirred. Many of the water books (located in the 3D section of my website) and 2D works shown here act as vessels for reflection. They hold memories, questions, and the realization that identity, like water, is constantly moving—sometimes quietly, invisibly, beneath the surface. As I spent more time near rivers and streams, I found myself thinking about cycles—how nature decays, rebuilds, and renews—the phases of the moon, the pull of tides, the quiet rhythm of things becoming and unbecoming. I imagined small, unseen creatures living beneath the moonlit water—resilient, adaptable, shape-shifting. They became a language for parts of myself I didn’t yet have words for. As Above, So Below, explores what lives beneath the surface—what’s hidden, fragmented, and transformed. It is about reflection—both in the literal sense of water’s mirror and the internal kind that asks who we’ve been and who we’re becoming. Just as the tides return to the shore, I return to these themes: identity, memory, and the quiet power of change.
